We take you along as we make a road trip pitstop in Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve in southern Colorado, which are the TALLEST sand dunes in North America! Located nearby Alamosa, Colorado, this National Park is known for huge dunes, many of which peak over 600 feet above the surrounding valley floor, like the towering Star Dune, the crest of which reaches a height of 750 feet. One of the most fragile and complex dune systems in the world, it is maintained by a phenomenon of a naturally occurring wind-driven system where the varying winds push in different directions over time, keeping the dunes in a small area continually for thousands of years. Other highlights include the seasonal Medano Creek and beach created at the base of the dunes. A truly unique place to visit in the United States.
